The most common application for lowboy trailers is transporting heavy machinery or oversized items from one location to another. Some of the loads often moved using a lowboy trailer include bulldozers, excavators, backhoes, and other large equipment that wouldn’t fit on a flatbed or single-drop trailer.
There are three common types of lowboy trailers available on the market — and commonly found across Hale Trailer locations:
A fixed gooseneck lowboy trailer features a gooseneck that is permanently attached, allowing it to have less weight and a larger deck length. Usually found with ramps on the back, these trailers can accommodate larger loads with easy loading.
With a hydraulic mechanism to raise and lower the trailer, removable gooseneck lowboy trailers can be adapted to the need. While it doesn’t accommodate the same load capacity as a fixed gooseneck trailer, its versatility makes it a solid choice for many loads.
Stretch lowboy trailers are used for oversized freight that will not fit on a traditional lowboy trailer. Be sure to check with federal and state regulations on the arrangements you will need to use a stretch lowboy trailer on public highways.
Local regulations specify that you will need a special transportation permit if your load is oversized. Oversize loads are over 13’6” tall, wider than 8’6”, longer than 53’, or weighing over 80,000 pounds. In addition, you may also need red flags or lamps for any cargo that overhangs from the lowboy trailer, as well as escort vehicles. Your local experts at Hale Trailer can help you get everything you need to be compliant over the road.
