About Used Lowboy Trailers
Lowboy trailers come in various styles, including those with fixed or detachable necks—the latter often referred to as removable gooseneck trailers (RGNs). The advantage of an RGN is its ability to be lowered to ground level after detaching the front, facilitating easy loading from either the front or the back. They’re produced by a variety of manufacturers and can handle loads up to 80 tons, offering a versatile solution for transporting significant equipment across various industries.
To ensure both durability and a manageable weight, these trailers typically feature steel beam construction with decks reinforced with hardwood planks. For added convenience and safety during the loading and unloading process, they are often equipped with loading ramps, retractable outriggers for stability, and standard fittings for flags and wide load signs, in compliance with road safety standards.
What’s the difference between a Lowboy and RGN?
An RGN trailer (removable gooseneck trailer) is built for transporting tall, heavy, or oversized equipment, like excavators, wheel loaders, and industrial machinery. Unlike traditional lowboys, RGNs allow the front of the trailer to detach so equipment can be driven directly on and off. This “drive-on” feature makes RGNs especially valuable for construction, agriculture, and energy sector fleets.
At Hale Trailer, our inventory of used RGN trailers includes both mechanical and hydraulic detachment models. We carefully inspect every used trailer to ensure it’s road-ready and compliant with DOT safety standards.
Lowboy & RGN Manufacturers
Hale Trailer is proud to carry a full inventory of lowboy trailers for sale from some of the top manufacturers in the industry, including Fontaine, Talbert, Landoll, XL Specialized, and Etnyre. When looking for a used commercial lowboy, our selection of fully maintained trailers is checked for a valid FHWA inspection, so they are ready to go as soon as you need them.

Sizes
We carry lowboys ranging from 19’ to 27’ in deck length and extendable lowboys for larger loads, so whatever your hauling needs may be, Hale Trailer has the right trailer for the job. The gross vehicle weight rating of a lowboy is typically between 45,000 and 60,000 pounds for a standard 3-axle trailer. However, by adding axles or other commercial trailer equipment, the GVWR may increase. Lighter options, such as a 35-ton, 2-axle trailer, are also available. Trailer dimension restrictions may vary based on state, so be sure to speak with one of our trailer experts, who will be happy to help you find the perfect trailer for your fleet.
